People Behind the UPR

Human rights defenders using the Universal Periodic Review to create change in their countries

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is often seen as a process that takes place in Geneva, far from the realities faced by communities on the ground. Yet across the world, human rights defenders use the UPR as a tool to advocate for change in their countries.

Through stories and short videos, this series highlights their experiences and shows how engagement in UPR Info trainings, pre-sessions, and advocacy activities has supported their work to promote and protect human rights.

"For us, the UPR is both an opportunity to make our voices heard and an opportunity to collaborate."

Cynthia Florentin, Executive director, CDIA Uruguay

"Involvement in the UPR enabled us to structure our advocacy strategy on the basis of international instruments and by recalling Côte d'Ivoire's commitments to these instruments."

Aya Prisila N'Guessan, Legal and advocacy officer, Espace Confiance
