This event aims to shed light on the critical role of legal professionals in ensuring the implementation of international commitments generated by human rights mechanism, including the recommendations addressed in the Universal Periodic review (UPR) framework. While the UPR is recognized by the international community as an important platform to strengthen the rule of law, the judiciary helps ensure accountability. In fact, judges and lawyers are central actors in upholding the rule of law, namely by implementing international human rights commitments into their domestic legal system, promoting relevant reforms, prosecuting and repairing human rights violations, effectively implementing national legislation, and offering access to justice. Thus, the discussion will explore ways to promote strategic engagement of the judiciary within the UPR process.

The event will also be the occasion to present to the public the “Tips to enhance judicial engagement with the United Nations Universal Periodic Review”, aimed at supporting states and other stakeholders to engage the judiciary in the UPR mechanism and conceived by the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI), UPR Info, and the International Association of Judges (IAJ).
