Indigenous peoples’ rights and AI: A new challenge

Every 9 August, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples shines a spotlight on issues vital to their future.

This year’s focus — Indigenous Peoples and Artificial Intelligence — addresses urgent concerns: cultural data used without consent, intellectual property over ancestral knowledge, and the risk of deepening historic inequalities. 

In recent years, the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) has amplified Indigenous voices. Now it faces a new test: ensuring their rights in a AI-driven world.
