National consultation on drafting Togo's UPR mid-term reports
From September 4 to 6, 2024, Togo hosted a dynamic national consultation on drafting mid-term reports for its Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
Organized by UPR Info, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), and the Collective of Associations Against Impunity in Togo (CACIT), the event brought together key stakeholders to foster collaboration and ensure the effective implementation of human rights recommendations from Togo’s third UPR cycle.
The opening ceremony, presided over by the Minister in charge of human rights, Pacôme Adjourouvi, marked the start of an engaging series of activities. The consultation featured a multi-stakeholder meeting aimed at promoting a coordinated and inclusive approach to UPR recommendations, with participation from government officials, civil society representatives, and the CNDH. This multi-stakeholders meeting, held on September 4, provided a platform for national actors to present their achievements, identify challenges, and explore potential solutions. UPR Info also shared best practices for effective stakeholder consultation during this meeting.
An informative session offered government actors valuable insights into the drafting and significance of mid-term reports. UPR Info outlined the purpose of these reports, providing guidelines and highlighting good practices that can support Togo’s continued progress in the UPR process.
The workshop held on September 5 and 6 focused on strengthening civil society and NHRI capacities in drafting and submitting mid-term reports. Participants had the chance to engage in hands-on sessions within thematic groups, allowing them to apply the guidelines discussed.
This national consultation marks another significant step in reinforcing human rights accountability and ensuring that the recommendations from the UPR are translated into tangible actions.
Since 2021, Togo has been a priority country in UPR Info’s In-Country Programme, which focuses on building the capacity of UPR stakeholders. wo follow-up workshops are scheduled later in September to validate the draft reports of civil society organizations (CSOs) and the CNDH.
