Pact for the future: human rights on the sidelines

On 22 and 23 September 2024, world leaders gathered in New York for the Summit of the Future, to consider the actions needed to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

The event culminated in the adoption of the Pact for the Future, an ambitious roadmap aimed at strengthening and restoring confidence in the multilateral system. Unfortunately, we note the absence of a chapter dedicated to human rights in the Pact. Although these rights are at the centre of international discussions and are regularly monitored in Geneva, the failure to include a specific chapter devoted to them raises concerns.

How can international peace and security or sustainable development be guaranteed without a strong human rights perspective? The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is an effective tool in this respect.
