UNite to end violence against women
Mona M’Bikay, Executive Director of UPR Info, reflects on the violations women face and some of the progress made to fight gender based violence in a letter for Tribune de Genève.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women marks the launch of the UNiTE campaign (Nov 25- Dec 10) — an initiative of 16 days of activism concluding on the day that commemorates the International Human Rights Day. This year, the date holds particular significance as, in 2025, states will assess the progress made in implementing the Beijing Declaration, a global commitment to promote gender equality and women's rights in the political, economic, and social spheres, thirty years after its adoption.
Among the many instruments available to the international community to advance women's rights and combat violence against them, one stands out: the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). This process has a unique potential—not only to raise awareness and foster reflection on these critical issues among both the international community and local populations, but also to drive concrete actions at the national level.
