The UPR and legal practice: addressing gender-based violence

UPR Info is pleased to announce an upcoming online workshop for legal practitioners, organised in collaboration with the European Policy Institute (EPI) – Skopje.

The webinar will take place on 29 September 2026 and will explore how recommendations from the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) can be used by legal practitioners to support the protection and advancement of human rights, with a particular focus on gender-based violence. The workshop is particularly aimed at judges, prosecutors, lawyers, legal scholars and other legal and human rights practitioners interested in exploring the practical relevance of the UPR to their work.

The session will provide participants with an introduction to the UPR mechanism and examine how UPR recommendations can inform judicial practice, case law and institutional cooperation. It will be led by Nicoletta Zappile, UPR Info, and Ardita Vejseli,  European Policy Institute (EPI) – Skopje. Through practical examples, participants will be invited to consider how recommendations made through the UPR can be connected to their work at the national level and contribute to the implementation of international human rights standards. Organised in collaboration with EPI, the session will draw on its experience engaging legal and judicial actors on the UPR and human rights protection.

Legal practitioners play an important role in translating international human rights commitments into practice. Strengthening their knowledge of the UPR can help reinforce the connection between recommendations made at the international level and the interpretation, application and protection of human rights at the national level.

The event will be held in English and French interpretation will be provided. This initiative is made possible thanks to the support of the Ville de Genève.
