Understanding the UPR for Legal Practitioners
UPR Info is pleased to announce an upcoming online workshop specifically designed for legal practitioners.
The objective of the webinar is to provide essential information on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process and demonstrate how UPR recommendations can be effectively utilized within common law systems to support and advance human rights.
The workshop is organized with the support of Dr Michael Lane (University of Worcester, UK) and Dr Frederick Cowell (Birkbeck, University of London, UK). It will draw on insights from Dr Lane and Dr Cowell’s recent research on how to use UPR recommendations in UK courts. The research is available at this link.
Date: Tuesday, August 20, 2024
Time: From 15:00 to 16:30 pm
Platform: Zoom (Registration required)
As The Gambia prepares for its fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in January 2025, it is essential for legal practitioners to gain a thorough understanding of the UPR process and its implications. Legal professionals are pivotal in the implementation and enforcement of human rights standards. Familiarity with international mechanisms like the UPR is crucial for effectively integrating these standards into national legal systems.
This workshop is specifically tailored for legal practitioners in The Gambia, including lawyers, judges, legal scholars, and human rights advocates. We also welcome participants from other common law jurisdictions who are interested in the application of human rights mechanisms within their legal frameworks.
The event will only be in English.
