The UPR-SDGs connection

UPR recommendations play a crucial role in advancing human rights. But did you know they can also help states achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

The UPR provides a unique platform for countries to align their national development programs and policies with human rights principles, driving progress toward the 2030 Agenda.

By fostering dialogue among diverse stakeholders, the UPR emphasizes the importance of national mechanisms for reporting and follow-up. When effectively structured, these mechanisms bring together agencies, decision-makers, and communities to enable inclusive discussions at all levels of society. Integrating the 2030 Agenda into these efforts not only raises awareness of how international policymaking impacts human rights but also ensures that those furthest behind are prioritized. Engaging grassroots and community-level actors provides valuable insights into the human rights implications of development initiatives.

UPR-SDG connection

To highlight these synergies, UPR Info is launching a campaign to demonstrate how UPR recommendations can address a wide range of human rights issues while advancing SDGs. Through a series of factsheets, we will explore topics such as child marriage, responsible business practices, and climate action, offering stakeholders actionable insights into leveraging UPR recommendations for sustainable development.

Each factsheet features compelling statistics to demonstrate how specific human rights issues have been addressed through the UPR and their alignment with corresponding SDGs. Through concise visuals, we highlight examples of UPR recommendations that are both specific and action-oriented, showcasing how the UPR can complement other human rights mechanisms and international commitments. By emphasizing these connections and good practices, the campaign aims to inspire civil society actors—particularly those not yet engaged with the UPR—to leverage this mechanism more effectively in their national and international advocacy efforts.

As part of the #16DaysOfActivism against gender-based violence, we began our campaign with two factsheets linked to SDG 5 on gender equality.  In the coming days, we’ll release more factsheets highlighting the links between the UPR and other SDGs.

Stay tuned!
