UPR training for francophone NHRIs
UPR Info, in partnership with the Association of Francophone National Human Rights Commissions (AFCNDH), is launching an online training programme for Francophone National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) wishing to strengthen their engagement in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
The training will take place from 6 July to 13 August 2026 through the UPR Info e-Hub, an interactive online learning platform dedicated to the UPR. Designed to be flexible and accessible, the programme combines self-paced modules with interactive sessions, allowing participants to follow the training progressively and at their own rhythm during the training period.
The deadline to register, has been extended until 1 July 2026. The registration template is only available in French.
Who is the training for?
The training is intended for members and technical staff of Francophone NHRIs involved in the follow-up of international recommendations, cooperation with United Nations mechanisms, human rights monitoring, or national and international advocacy.
Particular attention will be given to the needs of NHRIs from small States and Francophone island States, which may face specific challenges related to resources, international visibility or access to multilateral spaces.
The indicative number of participants is 20 to 30 people. Where possible, 2 to 3 representatives per NHRI may participate.

Why participate?
The UPR is an essential tool for NHRIs: it helps strengthen national dialogue, support the follow-up of international recommendations, and contribute to the better implementation of States’ human rights commitments.
This training will provide participants with practical tools to better understand the UPR mechanism and identify concrete opportunities for engagement before, during and after the review.
Through this programme, participants will be able to:

consolidate their understanding of the UPR process;

better identify the specific role of NHRIs in the UPR cycle;

exchange experiences and good practices with other Francophone NHRIs;

access practical tools to develop strategies for written contributions, advocacy and follow-up; and strengthen cooperation with public authorities, civil society and national mechanisms for implementation, reporting and follow-up.
Training format
The training will be organized online through the UPR Info e-Hub. It will combine self-paced modules, written and audiovisual resources, practical exercises and interactive sessions facilitated by UPR Info and AFCNDH.
Each module will include approximately 3.5 hours of content, which participants will be able to complete at their own pace during the defined period. Interactive sessions will also be organized to introduce the modules, answer questions, explore selected issues in greater depth, and encourage the sharing of experiences and good practices among participants.
Certificate and follow-up opportunities
Participants who complete all modules will receive a certificate of completion. Following the training, some particularly engaged participants may also be considered for participation in an in-person workshop organized by AFCNDH by the end of 2026.
Indicative programme
Module 1 — UPR fundamentals
6–16 July 2026
Principles, objectives, stages of the cycle, key documents and entry points for NHRIs.
Module 2 — The role of NHRIs in the UPR
20–31 July 2026
NHRI mandates, possible forms of engagement, cooperation with national stakeholders and good practices.
Module 3 — Advocacy, follow-up and implementation of recommendations
3–13 August 2026
Formulating SMART recommendations, advocacy, follow-up of accepted recommendations, mid-term reporting and national coordination.
