Using the UPR to advance human rights in the climate change era

UPR Info will hold two training courses on how to use the UPR as a tool to advance human rights in the context of climate change.

The sessions will take place on Monday 16th December 2024 and Tuesday 17th December 2024 at 14.00 (CET). It will be conducted online in English.

The objectives of this training are to explore the critical intersection between climate change and human rights, providing participants with the tools to leverage the Universal Periodic Review mechanism to address environmental-related human rights challenges.

As climate change increasingly drives environmental degradation, extreme weather events, and biodiversity loss, its disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations makes it essential to adopt a human rights-based approach in tackling these global challenges. Despite increasing recognition of its impact on human rights, recommendations related to the environment remain underrepresented in the UPR process. Thanks to its universality, the UPR can be an extremely effective tool to advance the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment and human rights affected by climate change. The training will also be a platform to discuss how the UPR, through advocacy for impactful recommendations addressing the consequences of climate change, can reinforce laws and institutions, as well as mobilize public policies that call for environment protection.

The training agenda includes:

  1. Monday, 16th December: introduction to the UPR process.
