• Open NGO letter on budget challenges for UN expert bodies

    On 28 May 2019, over two hundred and fifty NGOs addressed a letter in unison to all permanent missions in New York and Geneva to express their concern over a significant funding gap affecting the ability of various human rights mechanisms and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to effectively carry out their mandates. Due to funding shortages, the sessions of six Treaty Bodies will no longer be held in Autumn 2019. Fact-finding missions and Commissions of Iniquiry investigating human rights violations may similary be adversely affected.
  • Highlights of the 33rd UPR Session: SDGs, Climate Change and LGBTI rights

    The 33rd Working Group for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) held its sessions from 6-17 May 2019. The human rights situation in the following fourteen states was reviewed: Norway, Albania, Democratic Republic of Congo, the Ivory Coast, Portugal, Bhutan, Dominica, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Brunei Darussalam, Costa Rica, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Qatar, and Nicaragua. In total, 1,271 statements and 3,328 recommendations were delivered, with an average of 91 speakers and 238 recommendations per review.
