Kyrgyz CSOs kickstart the drafting of their UPR report

On 10-11 April 2019, 67 participants joined the UPR submission workshop, co-organised by Bir Duino Kyrgyzstan, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ (OHCHR) Regional Office for Central Asia (ROCA), the National Center against Torture (NPM), the Ombudsman of the Kyrgyz Republic and UPR Info in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The event brought together urban and rural human rights defenders from the seven regions of the country working on a broad scope of human rights issues.

The workshop layed the foundation for joint CSO submissions through the establishment of ten thematic groups which discussed about priority issues and recommendations to include in their joint report ahead of Kyrgyzstan's 3rd cycle UPR review schedulded to take place in January 2020. UPR Info provided four main technical sessions to improve UPR knowledge amongst civil society stakeholders. Participants linked their specific issues with recommendations stemming from other UN Human Rights Mechanisms as well as with the Sustainable Development Goals and targets. The high number of CSO participants from all regions of Kyrgyzstan, encompassing a significant proportion of newcomers to the UPR, demonstrated the importance attached to the third cycle by national civil society.

Bir Duino Kyrgyzstan and OHCHR ROCA committed to facilitate additional activities to finalise CSO submissions ahead of the deadline on 18 July 2019.
