Kyrgyz Stakeholders brief International Representatives on UPR Mid-term Implementation
On October 19, UPR Info’s In-country Programme (ICP) and the Human Rights Mouvement “Bir Duino-Kyrgyzstan” organised a mid-term briefing on UPR implementation for members of international organisations, development agencies, and the diplomatic community in Bishkek and online.
The event was organised with support of the Regional Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for Central Asia. The briefing was made up of an interactive session followed by a human rights café.
The interactive sessions gave local human rights defenders, the National Center for the Prevention of Torture, and the Ombudsperson’s Institute of the Kyrgyz Republic the opportunity to present the human rights situation in Kyrgyzstan since its last review and the challenges that remain. Each panellist was given five minutes to present followed by a question and answer session for attendees to ask clarifying questions before moving to the human rights café.
The Human Rights Café consists of an informal session to share specific information among diplomats and participants. Diplomats circulate among three groups according to their interests: 1) Civil and Political Rights, 2) Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and 3) Groups in situations of vulnerability.
The human rights café allowed diplomats and members of the international community to ask for further clarifications and make comments on the interactive dialogue. It also acted as an opportunity to jointly discuss how stakeholders can work together to achieve an inclusive and sustainable UPR process. Overall interest in the event was high with 24 representatives from the international community attending.
