The UPR and Its Role in Enhancing the Work of the UN Treaty Body System

Since its establishment, the UPR provides the opportunity for each States to report and declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries.

In the article, “The Universal Periodic Review and Its Role in Enhancing the Work of the UN Treaty Body System”, Miloon Koothari, President of UPR Info and the former UN Special Rapporteur on Housing, identified lessons and good practices from the UPR process that can contribute to increase the impact the work of UN Treaty Bodies at the national level in the promotion of human rights.

The article published on Opinion Juris highlights how the UPR process produced a number of methodologies and monitoring tools that can be also used to TBs in the follow-up work of their Concluding Observations. These mechanisms and tools can serve as guides in developing mid-course assessments as we move to the reform of the work of TBs, including changes in the time period between the examination of State reports.
