Publication launch: Good practices for UPR Mid-term Reporting

On 11 April 2018, UPR Info launched its latest publication, "UPR Mid-term Reporting: Optimising Sustainable Implementation" (French version available here). The publication identifies good practices for UPR stakeholders - States, civil society organisations (CSOs), and national human rights insitutions (NHRIs) - on how to promote accountability and action between one review and the next. The publication further illustrates how a multi-stakeholder consultation process preceding the publication of a mid-term report provides a bedrock on which the national UPR momentum can be reinvigorated. 

For the launch event, UPR Info was honoured to be joined by H.E. Mr. Julian Braithwaite, Ambassador, Permanent Representative, of the Permanent Mission of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva. During his address, Ambassador Braithwaite highlighted the role of mid-term reporting in promoting accountability and action between one review and the next. He further offered tangible examples of how the UK sought to ensure its own compliance with the UPR through ensuring various follow-up activities including: providing an update to the international community on the status of implementation of up to five recommendations one year after its third review; and preparing a mid-term report in 2019. UPR Info expresses its gratitude to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for supporting this publication. 

Mid-term reporting constitutes a cornerstone for inclusive and sustainable dialogue and actions that will ensure that the domestic human rights situation continues to improve for all members of society. To date, 68 States and 52 CSOs/NHRIs have submitted mid-term reports (1st and 2nd cycles included). UPR Info hope that through its new publication, more stakeholders will be incentivised to accelerate implementation and to highlight human rights updates through developing mid-term reports.
