The 44th UPR Working Group starts next week!
The 44th session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group (WG) will take place in Geneva from 6 to 17 November 2023. The 14 States under Review (SuR) during this session are Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Canada, Cabo Verde, Colombia, Cuba, Djibouti, Germany, Russian Federation, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu and Uzbekistan.
It has been a year since the beginning of the 4th cycle of the UPR and 41 countries have been reviewed by the WG. Since then a total of 7,042 recommendations have been made by the Recommending States.
The UPR sessions will take place in Room XX, the Palais des Nations in Geneva and there will be a live broadcast for each session. UPR Info will be live-tweeting about developments at the WG sessions. The timetable of the 44th session is available here.
Between 29 August and 1 September this year, UPR Info held the Pre-sessions for the countries reviewed in the 44th session. Key UPR stakeholders, such as civil society organizations and national human rights institutions, were invited to address the key human rights issues in their countries and suggested recommendations to the State representatives based in Geneva. All the documents related to the Pre-sessions as well as the national reports, compilation of UN documents and other relevant documents can be found on the country pages of UPR Info’s website.
The final outcomes of the reviews of the countries reviewed during the 44th Working Group session will be adopted during the 56th session of the Human Rights Council in March 2024.
