UPR Info co-organises a CSO strategy workshop in Mongolia
On 27-29 May 2015, UPR Info, along with the Open Society Forum of Mongolia (OSF), organised the “CSO strategy workshop on implementation of UPR recommendations”.
During the three-day workshop, Mongolian civil society members discussed their experiences with the UPR mechanism from 2010 to 2015; reviewed the recommendations that Mongolia received in the 2015 UPR; wrote an implementation plan to propose solutions for how the recommendations should be implemented; outlined an action strategy to identify advocacy activities to ensure UPR implementation; and finally adopted an outcome charter in which CSOs defined and agreed on priorities for the implementation of the recommendations. Please download the outcome charter.
The opening remarks were delivered by the UN resident coordinator, showing once again the importance of the cooperation among the different actors involved in the UPR process. The National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia (NHRC) was also present during the workshop. The NHRC is a very active stakeholder in the human rights field in Mongolia, their support and cooperation with CSOs is very important for the continuation and the success of the project.
The workshop was attended by over forty civil society representatives working on issues such as women’s rights and empowerment, LGBT rights, rights of the child, environment, access to health, mining, torture, justice, freedom of expression, etc. It was a unique opportunity for CSOs to further discuss how cooperation can improve the human rights situation in Mongolia.
In addition new CSOs, that had never participated in any of the OSF activities before, joined the workshop and will keep meeting with the OSF coalition in order to work on the implementation of the recommendations and on future projects as well.
“CSO strategy workshop on implementation of UPR recommendations” is the first step of UPR Info’s follow-up activities in Mongolia. A similar workshop was held in Armenia and Kenya in February 2015 and more such workshops will be organised in other countries in the course of 2015.
We look forward organising the "dialogue day" among representatives from the Government, CSOs and UN agencies, that will take place in October 2015 after the official adoption of the UPR working group of Mongolia.
