Side-event: Midterm Progress Reports and National Mechanisms for the Follow-up of UPR Recommendations

Thursday 18th September 2014, 12h00-14h00
Room XXII, Palais des Nations

We are delighted to invite you to a side event on Thursday 18th September, hosted by the Governments of the Kingdom of Morocco and the United Kingdom and in partnership with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Permanent Mission of Mexico, the Permanent Mission of Thailand, the Permanent Mission of Finland, the Permanent Mission of Mauritius, UPR Info and the Universal Rights Group. The event is designed as a stocktaking exercise building on the experience of a cross-regional group of states which submit interim reports or have national mechanisms for follow-up on UPR recommendations.

UPR Info will present figures on implementation of UPR recommendations at mid-term.

The side event aims to exchange experiences and good practices in order to:

  • Define the process of follow-up to the recommendations of the UPR as a continuous matter best achieved through national follow-up mechanisms or through interim reports;
  • Build partnerships between OHCHR, states willing to put in place mechanisms for follow-up on UPR recommendations or willing to submit interim reports, and states with experience in this field. The role of OHCHR will be particularly important in capacity-building and technical assistance;
  • Showcase the role expected from the National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), civil society and other stakeholders in the preparation and development of interim reports and in national mechanisms for the follow-up of UPR recommendations;
  • Encourage and raise awareness among states, NHRIs, NGOs and the media on the importance of a practical mechanism for follow-up on the implementation of UPR recommendations.
